A Winter Day in London

This week my boyfriend and I made a day trip to London. We left with no plan whatsoever, I just knew I wanted to see the Christmas Lights for the first time.

Of course I didn't keep in mind that we would need it to be dark to see the lights and because we got there at lunch time, we wanted to do something beforehand.

After leaving our train in St Pancras International we headed down to the tubes and got on Piccadilly Line. My boyfriend James spotted a poster which said that the next stop would be Russel Square which would take us to the British Museum and he asked me, if we should go. Me, happy to see every aspect of London, said yes straight away, so we left the tube and wandered to the Museum.

The building itself is very impressive, but especially the entry hall caught my eye. It's a clever blend of the original building and modern features, like the glass ceiling.

As we entered the foyer we turned right into Room 1 'Enlightenment', over to Room 2 'Collecting the World' and Room 2a 'The Waddesdon Bequest'. Those were filled with vases, sea shells, sculptures, trophies made of gold and lots more. I was especially fascinated by the whole shelf, full of natural stones that have been used for interiors and were truly beautiful.

We kept strolling upstairs and reached Room 27 'Mexico', Room 26 'North America', Room 24 'Living and Dying' and all the around to Room 4 'Egyptian sculptures'.

It turned out to be an even better idea to go there, as it started raining heavily as soon as we got inside, in real London manner.

There really was too much to see for the time we had, so we left after the rain slowed down. But at least we have another reason now to go back and see the rest of the British Museum.

Our hungry bellies carried us towards Covent Garden, where we sat down in a sandwich shop. Filled up with energy for another few hours we made our way to Regent Street. Because it slowly started to get darker, I was hopeful to see some light up Christmas decorations soon. We did some window shopping and strolled through a few shops but didn't have the urge to buy anything.

As we walked down Regent Street towards Oxford Street, we took a tube into Soho and along Carnaby Street, which was decorated with colourful and unique ornaments and lights.

By the time we reached Oxford Street it was dark enough to see the famous lights in all their glory.

Another place I wanted to go to was the Winter Market at South Bank. So we walked all the way down to Piccadilly Circus to get a tube to South Bank. Once we got there, we had a stroll down to London Eye and spontaneously decided to buy tickets because neither of us have been on it yet. The tickets are very pricey but we figured it's something we wanted to have done once and it felt like the right time.

The view was so beautiful and probably especially because we went when it was dark. Of course I can't compare it to the view at day time but I would recommend this way anytime, as it was truly special.

Afterwards we walked back down to the Winter Market, which was much smaller than we expected. It also got very cold, so we decided to have some dinner in the warmth and went into a restaurant right at the water front. We had a small dinner because we wanted to leave lots of room for dessert at the Market afterwards. So once we were warmed up again, we went back out and shared some fluffy Dutch Pancakes by the Thames.

The perfect ending of a great day in London.
