Christmas Trees

Last week I decorated our very first Christmas tree.

Because it is our first one, I had to get all new baubles and fairy lights, which made me wander into town.

I got lucky in Paperchase, when I was just looking for some Christmas cards. They sold packs of colourful baubles and had an offer on for 3 for 2. So I ended up paying 40 pounds for pretty glass baubles in blue, pink, silver, orange, gold and green (which sounds a bit messy, but is actually very lovely).

I then made my way up town to Wilko where I was planning on finding fairy lights, and I got lucky again.

With the main pieces in a bag, I was happy to start decorating. I should mention that last year I already collected unique large glass baubles, which were going to be the special addition for our tree. I got most of them from Mark&Spencer's and John Lewis, but even Wilko sells those kinds of baubles on a budget.

I went back home and decided to start straight away.

Of course I wrapped the lights around first. Then I started to add all of the same coloured baubles one by one. I made sure to leave room for the bigger baubles to make them stand out.

I was more than happy with the result and kind of upset it doesn't come out in the photos.

Because our tree stands in a corner, I just had to decorate two sides of the tree. That meant that nearly a whole box of baubles was left over.

I decided to hang some baubles onto one of my decorative elements in our living / dining room. It is my handmade plant hangers on a branch, which I put together earlier this year.

I thought bringing the same colours in, would really tie everything together.

I also added some battery run fairy lights I had laying around for a little more sparkle. Even the Makrame Christmas hangings I made last year found their way onto the element.

I'm sure you all know how to decorate a Christmas tree but maybe I was able to encourage you to get a last minute tree to give your home the Christmassy feel.

All the thinking about trees made me wonder where this tradition came from.

I found out that Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes.

This project really made me get into a Christmas spirit. Only 12 more days to go...
